How can I ask my MP to make representations on my behalf?
MP’s can only help people who live in their constituency area. Therefore, it is crucial that when you contact your MP you include your full address with your post code. One of the reasons this is important is it can sometimes take several days or weeks to hear back from your MP.
If your email does not include your email address, and the MP takes two weeks to get back to you. When they do get to you, you will be told the MP cannot help unless they have your post code to confirm you are one of their constituents.
So, you have to email them again to give them your post code.
Then if they are not your MP then they may refer you to who your MP is, but this would have taken two weeks.
Whereas if you have the correct details about who your MP is, when you contact them, you know that they have the correct details to respond to you.
An example of a request for help from your MP is below:
“Dear [add MP's Name],
By way of introduction, my name is [add your name]. I live at, [add your full address and post code].
Please make representations on my behalf to my the leader of my local authority concerning the issues below:
Please raise objections to the new housing development that will displace my neighbours and me;
Please raise a formal complaint on my behalf concerning the gatekeeping within the Council’s Housing and Homelessness department; and
Please raise the question below with the Prime Minister’s Office:
“What action(s) is the Prime Minister, the Prime Minister’s Office, the relevant Secretaries of State and government departments taking to increase funding for research into removing pain from the menstrual cycle?”
Kind regards,
[add your name and post code]”
